Biography

Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Cape Town and Director of HUMA – Institute for Humanities in Africa. My research focuses on the politics of suffering and smiling, particularly how urban youth seek ways to smile in the midst of their suffering, the political economy of African knowledge production, and the implementation of before African epistemologies in artificial intelligence. I have worked in Cameroon, Botswana, Senegal, South Africa and Switzerland, and held visiting research positions in Brazil, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands.
