Realigning German International Cooperation: Perspectives from Ghana and Senegal

Germany Senegal Ghana cooperation webinar poster

Background

APRI’s Economy and Society program has commissioned experts to Senegal and Ghana. Their mission is to analyze the impact of recent elections and changes of government in Senegal, Ghana, and Germany. These three countries have undergone democratic transitions that open the way to new partnerships.

Experts must answer several key questions. First, what policy changes could Germany undertake to expand the democratic space for the new Ghanaian government? Second, which of these options would have the greatest impact and why?

They must also consider political trade-offs. In particular, what adjustments will the German and Ghanaian governments have to make to implement these changes?

Finally, they must identify obstacles. For example, what sectoral interests are holding back these developments and how might coalitions for change be formed?

Dr. Sokhna Rosalie Ndiaye and Selly Ba (LASPAD) focused on Senegal. Bright Simons worked on Ghana. Dr. Bernhard Braune, BMZ representative at Division 202 Sahel – West Africa I, will respond to the articles.

A roundtable discussion will then bring together the authors and the ministerial representative. A question-and-answer session will follow. This will allow everyone to propose concrete policy avenues for reshaping bilateral cooperation in a rapidly changing world.

About the event

This webinar provides an opportunity for the authors to present key points from their respective articles. This event offers a rare opportunity to participate in a political debate on the future of German international cooperation, as Germany assumes its new role as the world’s largest bilateral donor and debates intensify on the need to reshape international cooperation.
