ZLECAf and conflict dynamics in Africa

LASPAD seminar poster: ZLECAf and conflict dynamics in Africa

The Laboratory for the Analysis of Societies and Powers / Africa – Diasporas (LASPAD) is pleased to invite you to an online seminar devoted to the future of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in a context marked by profound contradictions.

Africa has immense economic potential, but this remains hampered by persistent crises and threats:

  • Conflicts and insecurities: Mali, Sudan, DRC, Sahel, Horn of Africa.
  • Terrorism and transnational insurgencies: Boko Haram, AQIM, Al-Shabaab.
  • Coups d’état and political instability: Burkina Faso, Niger, Gabon, Mali.

While these conflict dynamics threaten the effectiveness of the AfCFTA, they also highlight its possible role as an instrument of peace, thanks to:

  • economic interdependence,
  • inclusive development strengthening security,
  • the consolidation of governance,
  • the link between economic integration and peace processes.
