Sustainability Chair

In West Africa , the average rate of access to electricity is 52%. with high access costs. According to WHO (2022), in sub-Saharan Africa, more than one person in three (35% of the population) has no access to drinking water. Despite the existence of a fairly extensive hydraulic network, the question arises as to how to mobilize this potential for current uses (drinking water, agriculture, energy, etc.). According to the World Bank (2023), in 2018, 6.9 million tonnes of plastic waste were dumped by the 17 coastal countries of West Africa. countries.

The FAO (2021) reports that forest loss in Africa accelerated between 2010 and 2020, from 3.4 to 3.9 million hectares less each year.

How can we think or rethink sustainability in West Africa in such a context? How can it make effective use of its natural resource potential (forests, water, energy, etc.) to achieve sustainable development?

These findings and questions have prompted LASPAD and the Institut d’Appui au Développement (IAD) in Lyon (France) to set up the “Water, Environment and Sustainability in West Africa” Chair.

Objectives of the Chair :

  • Global reflection on water and environmental governance for endogenous sustainable development in West Africa.
  • Strengthen and diversify the range of training courses on this theme for a variety of audiences
  • Carry out a range of research activities and actions to develop innovative solutions adapted to the West African context.

Focus of the Chair :

  • Epistemology of sustainability in West Africa
  • Water: water governance and sanitation
  • Energy: access to electricity and energy transition
  • Endogenous financing of environmental policies
Start of lessons: October 2024
