WORKSHOP: “STRENGTHENING FEMINIST VOICES IN FRENCH-SPEAKING AFRICA
The organization of the workshop “Strengthening feminist voices in French-speaking Africa: a meeting between academics, activists and committed artivists” is in line with the logic of offering feminists, researchers, activists and artivists a space for dialogue and reflection on their “work, commitments and struggles beyond national borders.
The idea is to deepen reflection on the actions to be taken and the structuring of advocacy to be implemented to strengthen feminist voices in French-speaking Africa.
The Atelier is the result of collaboration between LASPAD and the magazine Feminist Africa. The journal Feminist Africa aspires to provide a space for African feminist scholars and activists/artivists to engage in contextualized feminist theorizing, debate and discussion. As a journal, space is devoted to recognizing the work feminists do in various fields of advocacy, particularly within non-governmental organizations.
French-speaking Africa, which accounts for around a third of the continent’s surface area, faces many challenges, including the crisis of democracy, the fragility of the rights acquired by women and the impossibility of acquiring new ones. These challenges are particularly pronounced in the Sahel region, where political instability, violence and poverty are commonplace. Both organizations seek to address these challenges by amplifying women’s voices and the need for collective effort.
Objectives :
- List feminist artivism, activism and research initiatives in French-speaking African countries, identifying points of convergence and divergence, good practices and opportunities for collaboration.
- Develop concrete recommendations to strengthen gender equality, social justice and women’s effective participation in policy-making.
- Provide a platform for knowledge-sharing, networking and capacity-building, fostering collective and sustainable action.
The workshop was attended by twenty researchers, artivists, activists and activists from the French-speaking world, with the exception of Gambia in view of current events concerning FGM. 12 participants came from the event’s host country (Senegal), while 8 others came respectively from Mauritania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Burundi, Togo, Niger, Congo and Burkina Faso.
